The Cell C Sharks are pleased to announce the signing of a quality group of schoolboy players whom will be joining The Sharks in 2019. The group prodominantly consists of players from KwaZulu-Natal.
This speaks to The Sharks commitment of retaining home grown talent in the province.
Currently the Cell C Sharks Under 19’s are unbeaten in the SA Rugby Under 19 Championship (including back-to-back wins over the Blue Bulls and Western Province), underlining the fact that the success, talent and depth of the junior rugby structures in the province are vital for the long-term success of The Sharks as a union.
There is great honour for youngsters to play representative rugby at a provincial level after school, as a route to a professional career that includes the likes of Currie Cup, Vodacom Super Rugby and hopefully later test match rugby.
Many of the newly contracted youngsters are not only thrilled to be secured by the province, but for a number, there is a huge amount of pride to wear the black and white jersey.
Of the players contracted, eight have been included in the SA Schools 2018 team. They are:
• Hanru Jacobs (Paul Roos Gymnasium)
• Emile van Heerden (Paarl Boys High)
• Lunga Ncube (Glenwood Boys High)
• Evan Roos (Paarl Boys High)
• Celimpilo Gumede (Durban High School)
• Rynhardt Jonker (Glenwood High School)
• Darren Hendricks (Boland Landbou)
• Lwandile Menze (Durban High School)
Another player on the list, Jaden Hendrikse from Glenwood High School played SA Schools last year but was not considered for selection this year due to injury.
The KZNRU Development department do a fantastic job at grassroots level. The significance and potential of the KZNRU development programme is highlighted with the signing of Celimpilo Gumede (above) from Mubatuba, who played at the KZNRU Talent Identification tournament in 2012. It was at this tournament that he was identified and went on to play for KZNRU U/13 High Performance team. He was then awarded a bursary from DHS and has since excelled to such a degree as to have been offered a provincial age-group contract.
The successes enjoyed by the Cell C Sharks Under 19s speaks of the excellent age group coaching provided to the age group players as well as the junior talent identification and contracting structures currently in place.
The Cell C Sharks look forward to welcoming these outstanding young men into our structures and are keen to start working with this group of talented players, who hopefully will have long and successful careers in the black and white jersey.
