Minimal Changes for Rebels

Our Cell C Sharks coach Robert du Preez has the good fortune to be able to largely retain the same side that took on – and defeated – the Jaguares two weeks ago for this Saturday’s Vodacom Super Rugby clash with the Rebels.

A fortnight ago, the Growthpoint KINGS PARK faithful were treated to a match resembling the intensity and physicality of a test clash, with the Jaguares, the Argentina national side in all but name.

This week, the Rebels visit from the Australian city of Melbourne, hoping to emulate the form that saw them defeat their top performing compatriots, the Brumbies, 19-17 in a tight encounter.

The Rebels have had something of an up and down season this year, suffering some big losses, mixed with some quality rugby, as their victory over the two-time champions from their nation’s capital will attest to.

They will be a completely different prospect for our team, offering a very different challenge.

Continuity is like gold in a physically combatant sport like rugby. So often, the most successful teams have minimal disruptions during the course of the tournament and this week, Robert du Preez has named an almost unchanged line-up to tackle the Rebels.

Upfront, there is one change to our performing pack with Jean-Luc du Preez missing this match due to a niggle. His place in the starting XV will be taken by Philip van der Walt with Jacques Vermeulen providing loose-forward cover on the bench. Our pack has developed and grown into a tight unit and are reaping the rewards for their hard work. Amongst the backs, there are two positional and just one personnel change.

Curwin Bosch returns to flyhalf after an enforced late change that saw him shifting to fullback. This week, he plays in the number 10 jersey, with Rhyno Smith taking over the vacated fullback position.

The match kicks off at 19h30 with a host of rugby action, including the Cell C Sharks XV opening their Supersport Rugby Challenge campaign against Griquas in the earlier match scheduled at 17h00.
