Last weekend was an extremely emotional one for club rugby in KZN with SA Home Loans Durban Collegians hosting eThekwini Refractories Amanzimtoti after a memorial service for one of Durban Collegians favorite sons Gary Rodwell while up at Kearsney College Jaguar Land Rover Durban Hillcrest hosted Drakensberg RFC in their Rugby 4Amy fundraiser.
Rodwell who was capped on 36 occasions for Griquas also played a handful of games for Natal towards the end of his career when he moved to Durban from Kimberley.
As the Chairman of Collegians Ian Losinsky stated it wasn’t about who won the Fidelity ADT Premier Division game, which Collegians did beating their hosts 40-14, it was about a man who served his club and the game with distinction and was grateful to the Amanzimtoti side for their wonderful support on the day. Thanks also went out to former Proteas spin bowler Pat Symcox, also originally from Kimberly, on the wonderful eulogy for his long time friend.
Described as an unbelievably successful charity day at Kearsney by Hillcrest Chairman Rene Missen tributes poured in for what Hillcrest Villagers are doing for a beautiful 15 year old young lady Alma van Heerden who has been suffering from Acute Lymphoid Leukemia for a long while now.
Once again it wasn’t about who won or the score the focus was on a brave young lady Amy and Rugby 4Amy, in which the game turned out to be a cracker with the Villagers edging out the lads from Winterton 24-19. Club Rugby definitely has a soul and a special thanks to long time member of the young club Brian Lewis who is the mainstay behind this incredible charity day together with Trevor Duggan.
In the Other Premier Division games James Bruce (3), Chess McCarthy (2) and Phiko Sobahle (2) led try scoring spree for Varsity College in their 57-20 win over Standard Bank Richards Bay. Their other tries came from Michael Sibiya and Donavan Grant with Bruce converting three of the nine tries and Rynhardt Jonker two while across at the home of Bidvest Insurance Crusaders the home side beat FNB UKZN Maritzburg 41-27.
On Friday evening College Rovers will host Varsity College, Crusaders will travel to Richards Bay to face the hard men from the Bay and UKZN Maritzburg host Amanzimtoti at the Peter Booysen Stadium in the capital.
In the other First Division games Maritzburg Collegians edged out Jaguars15-14 and Westville Old Boys beat South Coast Warriors 24-10 at Jimmy Bellows Park.
In an Under 20 game played as a Curtain Raiser to the Currie Cup game between Griquas and Cell C Sharks at Jonsson Kings Park on Friday evening Varsity College scraped home 29-28 against a vastly improved College Rovers outfit.
