Born and raised in Paarl, Johan Momsen came through the rugby nursery of Paarl Gimnasium before representing Western Province at Under-19 level in 2014. He went on to Stellenbosch University, where he captained the Maties in the 2019 Varsity Cup.
Momsen made his Currie Cup debut for Griquas in July 2019 - fittingly, against the Sharks - and won the SuperSport Rugby Challenge that same year. A move to Major League Rugby followed, where he was named 2021 MLR Forward of the Year with Rugby ATL, added NPC experience with Manawatu, and earned All-MLR Second Team honours with Houston in 2025. He made his Hollywoodbets Sharks debut on 17 July 2026, starting at lock against the Pumas in the Currie Cup.
