Thirteen men in Christchurch, 19 points down in Belfast, a try after the hooter in Lyon. Ten Hollywoodbets Sharks wins that came when almost nobody gave them a chance.
From Natal’s first Currie Cup triumph to dramatic European nights, these are ten victories that remind us what the Sharks can achieve when the odds are stacked against them.
Some victories are remembered for the trophies they bring. Others endure because of the circumstances in which they were achieved.
Across more than three decades, Natal and the Sharks have beaten reigning champions, conquered hostile away grounds and recovered from seemingly impossible positions. These ten victories capture that tradition.
1. 1990: Natal 18-12 Northern Transvaal
Currie Cup Final | Loftus Versfeld
Natal travelled to Pretoria as underdogs against a formidable Northern Transvaal side. Instead, they produced a famous 18-12 victory to claim their first Currie Cup title. It was a breakthrough moment for the union, establishing Natal as a force in South African rugby and laying the foundations for the successes that followed.
2. 2012: Sharks 30-17 Reds
Super Rugby Quarter-final | Brisbane
Having finished sixth in the regular season, the Sharks faced the defending champions in their own backyard. The Reds were a formidable obstacle, but the Sharks delivered a convincing knockout victory to advance. Their campaign was alive, and another daunting away assignment awaited.
3. 2012: Sharks 26-19 Stormers
Super Rugby Semi-final | Newlands
The Stormers had finished top of the South African conference and enjoyed home advantage. The Sharks had other ideas. Freddie Michalak's kicking, including two drop goals, helped secure a seven-point victory and send the Sharks into the Super Rugby final. Two away playoff wins had taken them further than many expected.
4. 2013: Sharks 33-19 Western Province
Currie Cup Final | Newlands
Western Province entered the final unbeaten, with home advantage and the opportunity to finish a remarkable season with the trophy. The Sharks had finished third in the regular season. Charl McLeod's early intercept try helped turn the occasion in the visitors' favour, while Patrick Lambie contributed 23 points. The Sharks ended WP's unbeaten run and claimed the title in Cape Town.
5. 2014: Sharks 30-25 Crusaders
Super Rugby | Christchurch
The Crusaders were among Super Rugby's most formidable teams, but the Sharks produced an extraordinary victory in Christchurch. Jean Deysel's red card left them with 14 men for more than an hour, and they were reduced to 13 for a period. Yet they scored three tries, with Kyle Cooper crossing late to seal a historic win. It was a triumph of resilience against one of the competition's great powers.
6. 2016: Sharks 15-14 Highlanders
Super Rugby | Dunedin
The defending champions were at home, while the Sharks arrived on a three-match losing streak. The Highlanders scored the only try, but Garth April kicked five penalties from five attempts, including the decisive kick late in the match. It was not pretty, but it was effective: a one-point win built on discipline, defence and composure.
7. 2024: Sharks 32-31 Clermont Auvergne
EPCR Challenge Cup Semi-final | London
A difficult domestic season threatened to define the Sharks' campaign, but Europe offered another opportunity. Clermont led by 13 points in the second half, leaving the Sharks' hopes of reaching the final hanging by a thread. Vincent Koch and Makazole Mapimpi scored crucial tries, and Siya Masuku's kicking helped complete a remarkable comeback. The Sharks won by a single point and advanced to their first EPCR final.
8. 2025: Sharks 22-19 Ulster
United Rugby Championship | Belfast
The Sharks trailed 19-0 in Belfast, facing a daunting deficit at a notoriously difficult venue. Rather than fold, they fought their way back through tries from Makazole Mapimpi, Vincent Tshituka and Jurenzo Julius. Jordan Hendrikse levelled the scores before kicking the decisive penalty with three minutes remaining. From 19 points down, the Sharks had completed a remarkable away comeback.
9. January 2026: Sharks 30-19 Stormers
United Rugby Championship | Cape Town
The Sharks arrived in Cape Town struggling near the bottom of the table. The Stormers, meanwhile, were unbeaten in the URC and had won eight consecutive matches in the competition. The visitors produced a disciplined, physical performance to end that run and secure their first URC victory away to the Stormers. It was a statement result in a difficult season - and an early indication of what the Sharks could produce under pressure.
10. October 2026: Sharks 40-33 Lyon
EPCR Challenge Cup | Lyon
With a reshaped side and their Springbok stars rested, the Sharks faced a demanding European away fixture. Lyon fought back to level the scores at 33-33, seemingly leaving the visitors with a draw. But the Sharks launched one final attack, and Litelihle Bester crossed after the hooter to secure a dramatic victory. Fast, physical and relentless, the Sharks found a way when it mattered most.
Different generations, different competitions and different challenges - but the same enduring thread.
Natal conquered Loftus in 1990. The Sharks survived with 13 men in Christchurch, recovered from 19 points down in Belfast and found a match-winner in France.
When the odds are against us, the Sharks have a history of finding a way.
