How the Vodacom URC and the EPCR Challenge Cup work

How does the Vodacom URC work?

Sixteen clubs from Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa and Wales play 18 regular-season rounds between September and May. The top eight go through to the quarter-finals on 29 May 2027, the semi-finals follow on 5 June, and the Grand Final is on 19 June.

How are URC log points awarded?

Four for a win and two for a draw, plus a bonus point for scoring four or more tries and a second for losing by seven points or fewer. The Hollywoodbets Sharks play 18 league matches, so 90 points is the theoretical maximum.

What is the South African Shield?

The 16 clubs are split into four regional pools, and each pool awards a Shield decided only on the six matches played inside it — home and away against the Vodacom Bulls, DHL Stormers and Fidelity ADT Lions. It runs alongside the league table and has no bearing on who reaches the play-offs.

How do the Hollywoodbets Sharks qualify for the Champions Cup?

The URC holds eight places in the following season's Investec Champions Cup. The top five on the final table are guaranteed a place; the remaining three depend on who wins the two European competitions.

How does the EPCR Challenge Cup work?

Eighteen clubs drawn from the URC, the Gallagher Premiership and the Top 14 are split into three pools of six, each playing four pool matches across October, December and January. The top three in every pool go through to the round of 16 on 2–4 April 2027, along with the three best-placed clubs behind them and four sides dropping down from the Champions Cup. The final is at the OL Stadium in Lyon on 22 May 2027.

Who are the Sharks in a Challenge Cup pool with?

Pool 2, alongside Benetton Rugby, LOU Rugby, Newcastle Red Bulls, Castres Olympique and Scarlets. Four of those five are played — away to LOU and Benetton, at Hollywoodbets Kings Park against Scarlets and Castres.
