Eight playoff places, 18 rounds and 90 points on offer. Here is how the Vodacom United Rugby Championship log, bonus points and SA Shield work, and where the Hollywoodbets Sharks stand after Round 1.
The Vodacom United Rugby Championship brings together 16 clubs from South Africa, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Italy - all chasing one prize and eight places in the playoffs.
But how exactly does the URC work? How are log points awarded? What is the SA Shield? And what do the Hollywoodbets Sharks need to do to reach the knockout stages?
Here is your simple guide to the 2026/27 URC season.
WHO IS IN THE VODACOM URC
The VODACOM URC features 16 clubs: four from South Africa, four from Ireland, four from Wales, two from Scotland and two from Italy.
The South African teams are the Hollywoodbets Sharks, Vodacom Bulls, DHL Stormers and 10bet Lions.
Each club plays 18 regular-season matches. Six of those come against the other three teams in their geographical pool, with each club playing its three pool rivals home and away. The remaining 12 matches are against teams from outside that pool.
All 18 matches count towards one overall league table.
HOW DOES THE URC SEASON WORK
The regular season runs from September through May, with each team playing 18 matches.
At the end of the regular season, the top eight teams on the overall log qualify for the playoffs.
The quarter-finals are played between first and eighth, second and seventh, third and sixth, and fourth and fifth, with the higher-ranked team hosting.
The four quarter-final winners progress to the semi-finals, followed by the Grand Final.
In other words: finish in the top eight and you are in the playoffs.
HOW DO URC POINTS AND BONUS POINTS WORK
The URC uses a familiar rugby points system, but bonus points can make a major difference over an 18-round season.
A team earns:
- 4 points for a win.
- 5 points for a win in which it scores four or more tries.
- 2 points for a draw.
- 1 bonus point for scoring four or more tries in a defeat.
- 1 bonus point for losing by seven points or fewer.
- 2 bonus points if a team both scores four or more tries and loses by seven points or fewer.
That means a team can collect points even when it does not win - and over 18 rounds, those extra points can become extremely valuable.
For the Sharks, there are 90 league points theoretically available across the 18-match regular season.
How does the log and playoff race work?
There is one overall URC league table. The top eight at the end of Round 18 qualify for the quarter-finals.
If teams finish level on league points, the URC's tie-breakers begin with the number of matches won, followed by points difference, tries scored and further criteria if necessary.
That means every match matters — and so does every try, every close defeat and every bonus point.
THE HOLLYWOODBETS SHARKS' POSITION

The Sharks opened their 2026/27 campaign with a 41–24 victory over Ospreys at Hollywoodbets Kings Park, earning a four-try bonus point in the process.
That leaves the Sharks on five points after Round 1, level with the Vodacom Bulls, DHL Stormers, Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby at the top of the early standings.
There is obviously a long way to go. The Sharks have 17 regular-season matches remaining, including home fixtures against the defending champions Leinster, the Stormers, Bulls, Lions, Dragons, Edinburgh, Connacht and Glasgow Warriors.
The simple equation is therefore: keep collecting league points and finish inside the top eight after 18 rounds.
WHAT IS THE SA SHIELD
The SA Shield is the South African mini-competition within the URC.
The four South African clubs - Sharks, Bulls, Stormers and Lions - play one another home and away. Those six derby matches determine the SA Shield, while the same results also count towards the overall URC log.
The Shield runs alongside the main competition. Winning it does not automatically qualify a team for the URC playoffs.
The Sharks won their first SA Shield in 2025, securing it with a 25–22 victory over the Lions at Hollywoodbets Kings Park. They finished that Shield campaign with four wins from six local derbies.
The other SA Shield winners have been:
- DHL Stormers - 2022 and 2023
- Vodacom Bulls - 2024
- Hollywoodbets Sharks - 2025
- 10bet Lions - 2026
The Lions are the current holders, having won the Shield for the first time in 2026.
For the Sharks, the Shield provides another piece of silverware to chase - but the primary league objective remains reaching the top eight.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The Vodacom URC is an 18-round race for eight playoff places.
Five points from the opening round gives the Hollywoodbets Sharks an excellent start, but nothing is decided in September. The challenge is to keep building points across the season, bank wins at home, compete strongly on the road and make the bonus points count.
And there is no better reminder that every home game matters than the next one.
