Bio

Born in Qonce (King William's Town) in the Eastern Cape, Aphelele Fassi attended Dale College, where he played flyhalf and centre before settling at fullback. Standout performances at the 2018 Kearsney Easter Festival earned him a bursary to the Sharks Academy in Durban.

His professional career began with the Sharks in the 2018 Currie Cup, where his pace and counter-attacking flair helped the side win the title in his debut season, and he made his Super Rugby debut at fullback against the Sunwolves in February 2019. He has since become a mainstay of the Sharks back three across the URC, Currie Cup and EPCR competitions.

Fassi scored a try on his Springbok debut against Georgia in July 2021 and was recognised as South Africa's best young player of 2021. Re-established in the Bok setup, he was a 2025 Rugby Championship winner with seven tries in his first 15 Tests, and remains the Sharks' counter-attacking spark heading into 2026/27.
