A De Doorns native and product of HTS Drostdy in Worcester, Christie Grobbelaar came through the Western Cape schools ranks before making his name in the abbreviated game. He joined the Springbok Sevens programme in 2020 and rapidly became a mainstay of the Blitzboks squad.
Grobbelaar's sevens honours are exceptional: Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham in 2022, Olympic bronze in Paris in 2024 and an HSBC SVNS world series title, before scoring in the final as the Blitzboks won the 2025 Cape Town Sevens. Signed by the Sharks, he featured in the 2025 Currie Cup and made his URC debut in the 2025/26 season, and has started on the wing for the Sharks XV in the 2026 Currie Cup, including matches against the Pumas, Cheetahs and Stormers XXIII.
With size, gas and a decorated big-tournament temperament, Grobbelaar remains open about his mission in Durban: to become a Springbok in fifteens.
