Jean-Henri Smit is a product of the famed Grey College rugby factory in Bloemfontein, where he featured for the u17A side at the 2022 World Schools Festival before establishing himself as a high-workrate loose forward in the 1st XV in 2023, capable of playing both flank and No 8.
Recruited into the Sharks' junior system, Smit was a member of the U21 squad in 2025 and delivered on the biggest stage, scoring two tries in the Hollywoodbets Sharks U21s' 63-31 demolition of the Lions in the SA Rugby Under-21 Cup final in Durban in October 2025.
His reward has come quickly: in August 2026 he was named on the Sharks XV bench for the Currie Cup clash with the Stormers XXIII in Cape Town, putting him on the cusp of senior honours as the 2026/27 campaign unfolds.
