A product of Hoerskool Tygerberg in Cape Town's northern suburbs, Eben Etzebeth entered the Western Province youth structures in 2009, featuring at the Under-18 Craven Week. In 2011 he helped the UCT Ikey Tigers win the Varsity Cup and represented South Africa Under-20 at that year's IRB Junior World Championship in Italy.
He made his Stormers debut in Super Rugby in February 2012 and won the Currie Cup with Western Province that same year, before spells with the Red Hurricanes in Japan and Toulon in France. In February 2022 the Sharks secured his signature, and he made his debut in the URC in October 2022. He captained the Sharks to the 2024 EPCR Challenge Cup title against Gloucester - the first major European trophy won by a South African side.
Etzebeth debuted for the Springboks in June 2012 at Kings Park and is now South Africa's most-capped player with 141 Tests, a double Rugby World Cup winner (2019, 2023) and back-to-back SA Rugby Player of the Year (2022, 2023). He remains the towering enforcer of the Sharks pack heading into 2026/27.
