Sibongile Novuka was the star of the show for Impi converting six of the 10 tries to go with a try of his own. The other tries went to Llawdden Roux, Gacula Poswa, Azakiwe Afrika, Onke Jiba, Wandile Shabangu, Menzi Mabaso, Jordan De Vos and Byron Booysen.

In the other games Durban University of Technology (DUT) making their debut in the Varsity Shield were given a rude awakening being thoroughly trounced 134-11 by Walter Sisulu University (WSU) from East London and the Cape Province University of Technology (CPUT) beat the University of Fort Hare (UFH) 36-20.

Round Two sees the sides moving to Pretoria University (TUKS) with DUT having a buy.  Rhodes will play CPUT, UFH meet the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) making their first appearance and UKZN Impi play against UFH
