Lionel Cronje has seen it all – big games, pressure kicks, and the highs and lows of a 15-year professional rugby career. Now, the seasoned fly-half is adding a new string to his bow at the Hollywoodbets Sharks: guiding the next generation from the sidelines as a coach.
Since joining the Sharks in 2022, the 35-year-old has brought calmness, clarity, and serious rugby IQ to the backline. His experience shone through in Round 11 of the 2023 Currie Cup, when he steered the Sharks past the Cheetahs with a man-of-the-match display, racking up 15 points and dictating play with pinpoint precision.
“He’s a true professional,” said coach Joey Mongalo after that performance. “A guy who leads on and off the field, both with words and actions as well as preparation, so he deserves every bit of credit he receives.”
Now, Cronje is channelling that same drive into his new role as the Backs and Attacks Junior Coach – a shift that’s felt like a natural progression.
“It’s a good opportunity to give back to the youngsters and to the game that’s given me so much,” he says.
But it hasn’t been without its learning curve. Swapping the jersey for the clipboard comes with fresh challenges – session planning, motivating players, and managing development off the field. Still, one thing has come easily: connection.
“Something that’s come naturally to me is connecting with the players. Coming from a playing background, that’s really allowed me to be able to impart that knowledge onto them.”
Working with the U19 and U21 teams has reignited his love for the game – not through big stadium moments, but in the raw passion of youth rugby.
“You really forget, as you get older as a player, the excitement, the energy, the passion that these young guys bring – knowing that they’ve got their whole future ahead of them, their careers ahead of them, and just to be able to have a small part in and having the responsibility to guide them through that process and trying to make sure that their dreams come alive is really exciting.”
As Cronje continues shaping young Sharks, his mission is clear: to instill pride in the badge and help players thrive both on and off the field.
