From Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool captain to Junior Springbok world champion and now a Vodacom United Rugby Championship starter, Janco Purchase is making the most of every opportunity.
The opportunity arrived late. Janco Purchase had been preparing for it for a long time.
There are moments in a young player's career that are carefully planned. And then there are the moments that arrive unexpectedly.
For Janco Purchase, his first taste of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship came that way. Murray Koster was ruled out of the Hollywoodbets Sharks' opening-round clash against Ospreys with a minor back niggle. Purchase, who had spent the 2026 season establishing himself in the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV midfield, was suddenly in the starting line-up at inside centre.
There was no time to overthink it. He simply stepped in. And he looked at home.
Built Through The Pathway
Purchase's story had started long before that Saturday afternoon at Hollywoodbets Kings Park.
The Pretoria product made his name at Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool, where he became first-team captain and established himself as one of the school's leading midfielders. He also captained the Blue Bulls at Craven Week before earning selection at inside centre for the SA Schools side in 2023.
The next step was the Junior Springboks.
Purchase was selected for South Africa's 2025 World Rugby U20 Championship squad in Italy, where the Junior Boks went all the way - beating New Zealand in the final to claim the title for the first time in 13 long years.
It was another significant marker on a journey that was already moving quickly.
But the transition from junior rugby to senior rugby is where potential starts having to become something more tangible.
The Next Step
Purchase made his Sharks senior debut in July 2025 against the Fidelity ADT Lions in the Carling Currie Cup.
A week later, he started at No.12 against the Vodacom Bulls. By 2026, he had become a regular part of the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV midfield, getting valuable minutes in the Carling Currie Cup and continuing to develop his game in a senior environment.
It is not the glamorous part of a rugby career. There are no guarantees.
Just matches, training sessions, mistakes, improvements and the constant challenge of proving that the next opportunity should belong to you. Purchase kept putting his hand up.
Then Came The Call
The opportunity he had been working towards arrived in a slightly different way.
With Koster unavailable for the opening VURC match against Ospreys, Purchase was called into the starting XV.
He was not stepping into an unfamiliar position. He had played plenty of rugby at inside centre.
But this was different. This was the VURC. This was Hollywoodbets Kings Park.
And this was a Sharks side beginning a new era under Head Coach JP Pietersen.
Purchase partnered Jurenzo Julius in midfield and, rather than looking like a player filling a gap, quickly became part of the Sharks' attacking rhythm.
Ready When It Mattered
Pietersen's assessment afterwards was telling.
Purchase had done his homework. He had prepared. He had been paying attention.
And, according to his coach, he even keeps a book in which he writes everything down.
“Janco did everything right coming in at the last minute,” Pietersen said.
He described him as professional, well-prepared and smart - a player who simply wanted the opportunity.
Then came the most important part. He took it. Pietersen believed Purchase came close to a Carling Player of the Match performance.
That is quite an introduction to VURC rugby.
The Partnership
One of the most encouraging aspects of Purchase's performance was the way he fitted alongside Julius.
The pair combined in the build-up to Manu Tshituka's try, showing the sort of understanding and attacking intent that can take time to develop in a new midfield combination.
For Purchase, it was another indication that he was not merely capable of surviving at this level.
He could contribute. He could make things happen.
And he could do it without trying to be something he wasn't.
More Than A Fill-In
That distinction matters.
Purchase came into the side because Koster could not play. But by the end of the afternoon, the conversation was no longer simply about who had replaced whom.
It was about the player who had stepped into the jersey. That is the beauty of a squad.
One player's absence creates an opportunity for another.
And the Sharks' development system is designed to make sure that when those moments arrive, the next player is ready.
Pietersen specifically credited the junior system for building confidence and equipping young players to step into the VURC when their opportunity comes.
Purchase is one of those players.
The Name Is Janco
There is still a long way to go.
One strong VURC performance does not define a career. Purchase knows that.
But the ingredients are there: a strong schoolboy foundation, international age-group experience, senior rugby behind him and now the confidence that comes from discovering he belongs at this level.
The next challenge is consistency. The next opportunity is another chance to show what he can do.
And with the Sharks' young midfield beginning to take shape, there is plenty of reason to keep an eye on the Pretoria-born centre. The opportunity came late.
He was ready.
Janco Purchase.
Remember the name.
