There is something slightly surreal about Vusi Moyo’s last 18 months.
Not long ago, the Johannesburg-born flyhalf was coming through the Hollywoodbets Sharks pathway after leaving King Edward VII School. Then came a Junior Springbok World Championship title. Then his Hollywoodbets Sharks debut. Then the Springboks.
Now, at just 20, Moyo is preparing for another big night at Hollywoodbets Kings Park.
The remarkable thing is how quickly it has all happened - and how calmly he has handled it.
From KES to The Tank
Moyo represented the Lions at Under-18 level before matriculating from KES in 2024 and choosing the Hollywoodbets Sharks pathway.
In 2025, he helped the Junior Springboks win the World Rugby U20 Championship, finishing as the tournament’s leading points scorer with 63 points.
His progression continued in 2026.
After helping the Junior Boks win the U20 Rugby Championship just months earlier, Moyo was handed his first senior Hollywoodbets Sharks start against Zebre at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in May.
It was quite an introduction.
He scored a try and added five conversions as the Hollywoodbets Sharks ran out 54-19 winners. Fifteen points on debut, but more importantly, a glimpse of the composure that had already impressed those around the Hollywoodbets Sharks pathway.
Then came another phone call.
This time, it was from the Springboks.
“When the call came through on Monday, my heart missed a beat,” Moyo said ahead of his Test debut against Wales.
“It’s every kid’s dream to be part of this Springbok set-up.”
That excitement never sounded like pressure. Instead, Moyo spoke about being grateful for the opportunity to learn from players he had grown up watching.
“My family is part of me, and I want to make them proud,” he said.
His mother even missed his Test debut because she was watching his sister play hockey - although, as Moyo put it, she would be at Hollywoodbets Kings Park “in spirit”.
It is a small detail, but it says something about the person behind the rugby player. Even with the Springboks calling, family remained firmly at the centre of the moment.
Learning From The Best
Moyo has also been remarkably open about the influence of the players around him.
Handré Pollard was someone he had looked up to for years. Manie Libbok’s game had influenced him during his school days. Suddenly, he was sharing a Springbok environment with both.
When Pollard told him he was available if he needed anything, Moyo described it as special.
The advice was simple: focus on the detail, prepare properly and, when the moment comes, just play rugby.
That mentality has been noticed by the coaches, too.
Hollywoodbets Sharks attack coach David Williams described Moyo’s standout quality as his composure, particularly when matches become chaotic. Mike Vowles, who worked with him in the Hollywoodbets Sharks junior programme, recalled how quickly the young flyhalf grasped the team’s attacking philosophy and how naturally he communicated with teammates.
Even Rassie Erasmus highlighted the same qualities when explaining Moyo’s selection for the Springboks.
For a young flyhalf, Erasmus noted, Moyo does not shy away from the physical side of the game. He also praised his kicking, restarts, tactical kicking and soft hands.
The No. 10 Is Settling In
There was little time for Moyo to dwell on the Springbok experience.
He returned to the Hollywoodbets Sharks and started the opening match of the 2026/27 Vodacom United Rugby Championship season against Ospreys.
Again, he looked at home.
Moyo converted all four of the Hollywoodbets Sharks’ first-half tries before adding two second-half penalties. Six successful kicks. Fourteen points. And another composed performance as the Hollywoodbets Sharks opened their campaign with a 41-24 bonus-point victory.
The numbers are encouraging.
But they are not really the most interesting part.
The interesting part is that Moyo looks increasingly comfortable in a position where experience is usually everything.
He has barely begun his senior career, yet he is already being trusted to make decisions, manage territory and control games from No. 10.
And he seems to understand exactly what that responsibility requires.
“I’ve tried my best this week not to make it about myself,” he said before his Springbok debut.
“It’s about us just implementing what the coaches have taught us.”
That may be the most revealing thing Moyo has said.
For all the headlines, the milestones and the speed of his rise, he keeps bringing the conversation back to the team.
Still Just Vusi
There is another side to Moyo that has started appearing through the Hollywoodbets Sharks’ behind-the-scenes content.
The young flyhalf is comfortable enough around the squad to let the personality come through — whether he is around teammates, enjoying the lighter moments at training or simply getting on with life in Durban.
That matters.
Because while the rugby world has suddenly discovered Vusi Moyo, the Hollywoodbets Sharks have been watching his development for much longer.
They saw the youngster arrive in Durban and quickly ask questions. They saw the confidence to stand up and explain the team’s attacking philosophy. They saw a player who wanted to understand the game rather than simply play it.
Now everyone else is getting to see it.
And perhaps that is what makes his story so compelling.
He has gone from KES to Junior World Champion, from the Hollywoodbets Sharks pathway to Hollywoodbets Kings Park, and from his first senior appearance to a Springbok Test debut in a matter of months.
Yet when asked what it all means, his answer has remained remarkably grounded.
Make the family proud. Learn from the best. Do the job for the team.
Then, when the whistle blows, play rugby.
The Next Chapter
Moyo’s journey is only beginning.
There will be bigger matches, tougher moments and plenty more lessons along the way. But the early signs suggest the Hollywoodbets Sharks have a young flyhalf who is not intimidated by the stage.
And on Saturday, he gets another chance to experience one of rugby’s great occasions.
