Hailing from Esikhawini near Empangeni, where he was introduced to rugby at Richardia Primary, Fez Mbatha represented Cell C Sharks Schools in 2016 and 2017, from Maritzburg College, and he was South Africa’s first-choice hooker at the 2019 World Rugby U20 Championship – having already made his Super Rugby debut earlier that same year at only 19 years of age.
Mbatha was last year invited to a Springbok alignment camp, prior to the 2021 British & Irish Lions series.
This after he had started for the Cell C Sharks in the 2020 Currie Cup final against the Bulls, and was also one of the team’s frontline hookers during last year’s Rainbow Cup SA tournament.
